Kerala HaatMr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister for Tourism, Government of Kerala inaugurated ‘Kerala Haat’ Project at Vizhinjam in Trivandrum on June 12, 2008. In his inaugural speech, Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that tourists visiting Kovalam can see for themselves how traditional handicrafts are made, enjoy traditional food, watch and learn the traditional art forms. He added that the project, being a Responsible Tourism initiative, will also benefit local people.
Designed with the objective of promoting Kerala’s art and craft tradition among international tourists, the village will be constructed on 8 hectares of land following the model of the popular Dilli Haat at New Delhi and Suraj Kund at Haryana.
Estimated to cost Rs. 7.2 crore the village will consist of an amphitheatre, parking facilities for 100 vehicles, art and craft museum, artificial lake, medicinal plant garden, radial plant garden, traditional houses and theatres, rest houses, ethnic food corners etc.
The designs for the village were created by well known architect, Mr.G. Sankar, and partnered by KITCO. Cochin Scaffolding Pvt. Limited will carry out the development of the village Haat.
