Plan to boost Wayanad tourismA master plan is being prepared for further boost the booming tourism sector in Wayanad district. As a part of this initiative, officials of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) held discussion with architect R. Sankar. The architect, accompanied by DTPC officials, had visited Pookot Lake, Edakkal caves and Karapuzha dam recently. He will submit the master plan to DTPC in a month.
In the first phase, the master plan will focus on the development of Pookot Lake and Karapuzha dam. “We are planning tourism expansion without harming the lake’s eco system. We also plan to set up a garden and other amenities for tourists at Karapuzha dam,” P. Krishnaprasad, MLA, said.
As part of the plan, a replica of the famous Edakkal cave will be built on the banks of the lake. The children’s park beside the lake will be renovated, P.P. Gopi, District Collector and chairman of the DTPC said.
The pavement on the banks of the lake will be modernised and a boat jetty with modern facilities will be set up.
“We are also planning to appoint more security personnel for the protection of the tourists,” the Collector added. A garden will be set up at Karapuzha. Trekking facilities at Ambukuthy hills will be improved without disturbing the natural structure of the Edakkal caves.
After the completion of this master plan, eco-tourism facilities will be extended to other tourism destinations in the district such as the Kuruva Islands near Pulpally, Pazhassy’s tomb at Mananthavadi and Edakkal caves at Ambalavayal, Mr. Krishna Prasad said.
A district had witnessed a tourism boom recently and the DTPC was striving to provide the infrastructure for the sector’s growth, K.V. Biju, secretary of DTPC, Wayanad, said. Around 13,000 tourists reached Pookot Lake last Friday to celebrate Independence Day. The Central and State governments have evinced interest in promoting tourism in the district. ‘Destination Wayanad,’ a comprehensive report on the district’s tourism development, has been submitted by the State government to the Union government.
