Destination Management Councils to run tourism centresDestination Management Councils (DMC) have been set up at three tourism centres in the capital - Veli, Shanghumughom and Neyyar Dam - as part of the government’s effort to develop these centres. DMCs have been given the task of monitoring and managing the destination and the projects associated with it to ensure quality facilities; operate and maintain facilities created by Kerala Tourism and District Tourism Promotion Councils; and to keep the destination safe and clean. Besides, the DMC will have the power to address issues concerning infrastructure, security, unauthorised developments, encroachments and development. The council can also evolve strategies for the upkeep of the destination and undertake publicity and promotional activities.
The council will have to deposit 20 per cent of its gross income to the DTPC every year to enable the latter to utilize the corpus fund for the marketing of the destination and development of other destinations within the district. The local legislator will be the chairman of the DMC. V. Surendran Pillai, representing Thiruvananthapuram West in the Assembly, is the chairman of the DMC for Veli and Shanghumughom. V.J. Thankappan, representing Neyattinkara, is the chairman of the DMC for the Neyyar dam. The president/ chairperson of the local body in which the major portion of the destination falls is the vice-chairman of the council. The secretary, DTPC, Thiruvananthapuram, is the chief executive of the DMCs.
The business and the affairs of the DMC will be carried out in the name of the council by a 15-member executive headed by the chairman. The executive committee has to meet every month. The tenure of the executive committee will be three years. The staff appointed to the council will be on contract basis for not more than three years.
